SUMMARY:Western Australia - An Historical Boast with Richard Offen
DESCRIPTION:Western Australia – An Historical Boast \nWestern Australians do not seem keen to boast about the history of their State\, in fact few residents realise that on their own doorsteps are many features and places of international historical significance.\nStarting with fossils in the Pilbara and some of the earliest evidence of Aboriginal communal living\, to the remains of a fort on the Abrolhos Islands\, Richard Offen’s talk will give a virtual tour of some of the places that give Western Australian a very special status\nin the world’s history. Add to this some of the early buildings of the Swan River Colony\, set up in 1829\, and Richard will comprehensively debunk the myth that Western Australia has no history or heritage! \nRichard Offen: Biography\nAfter working in education for several years\, Richard Offen joined the staff of the UK National Trust in 1989 and from 1992 until 2003 was responsible for the Trust’s famous Neptune Coastline Campaign. Under his direction the campaign raised over £28\nmillion\, enabling the Trust to buy and protect nearly one hundred miles of the spectacular British coastline.\nRichard has wide experience of heritage matters around the world. During his time with the Trust\, he worked with organisations in the USA\, Spain\, Malta and the Czech Republic\, helping them develop conservation strategies and fundraising plans.\nDuring a six-month sabbatical in 2001\, Richard worked on secondment to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington DC and spent time on an exchange program with the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales and the\nNational Trust in Australia (WA) in Perth.\nIn 2005 he emigrated to Western Australia to become Executive Director of the newly formed organisation\, Heritage Perth. During his time in that post\, he gained great popularity as a lecturer and broadcaster on both radio and television. He is probably best\nknown in Perth for his Monday morning history spot on the 720 ABC Breakfast Show with the late\, much missed Eoin Cameron\, and still has regular spots on ABC Perth\, Capital Radio and 6PR.\nSince retiring\, Richard has written the Perth editions of Pavilion Books’ very popular series ‘Then and Now’ and ‘Lost Perth’. ‘Perth  Then and Now’ has the distinction of requiring a reprint before it was launched and is now on the Australian ‘best seller’ list having sold around 20\,000 copies to date. ‘Lost Perth’ has also now joined its companion of the Australian ‘best seller’ list. His third book for the same publisher\, ‘A Perth Camera’ was published in November 2022. Richard has also written histories of St Mary’s Anglican\nGirls’ School (‘A Place to Grow’ – published 2021) and Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School (‘The School in the Bush’ – also published in November 2022).\nWhen not in his study/library\, Richard is an active parishioner and Churchwarden of Christ Church\, Claremont\, sits on the Heritage Council of Western Australia; is President of both the Friends of the Battye Library and the Royal Western Australian Historical Society; and is a member of the selection panel for the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia’s Hall of Fame

SUMMARY:Heroes\, Villains and Vagabonds with Richard Offen
DESCRIPTION:Perth’s history is littered with wonderful characters that shaped the city in a multitude of ways. In this talk\, Richard Offen will take you on a fascinating journey through the history of Perth\, highlighting some of the people who\, in their own way\, for good or bad\, and even sometimes a bit of both\, contributed to the way Perth is today. Ladies such as Eliza Shaw\, who through her diaries and writings reveals the joys\, sorrows and extreme hardships of early life in the Swan River Colony. Then there is Moondyne Joe\, the infamous 19th century Houdini\, who managed to escape from many of Western Australia’s jails. Were they ‘mad\, bad or totally eccentric’? Come along and judge for yourself! \nRichard Offen is a historian\, lecturer\, broadcaster and overall champion for Perth. First visiting our city in 2001\, he said it was love at first site so to speak. The weather\, open space and greenery within our city are no comparison to gloomy UK and its wet weather\, where Offen originates from. Working with Heritage Perth\, they aimed to put the expression “Perth has no history” to bed! Developing walking tours around Perth they managed to attract a lot of Perth locals who were interested in knowing more about its history. Richard continues to educate people of Perth’s Heritage through his books “Lost Perth” & “Perth Then and Now”. \nJoin Richard in The Heritage Collective Theatre for a 1-hour talk\, with complimentary glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage on entry\, and another following the talk as you can chat ask Richard questions until 4pm.

SUMMARY:Waves of Change Exhibition - The Story of Cottesloe Beach
DESCRIPTION:The story begins more than 40\,000 years ago with the Noongar people who valued the coast here as an abundant source of food and an important spiritual site. The early settlers deemed it “barren and worthless”. It was not until the jetty was built in 1906 that Cottesloe Beach was established as Perth’s first surf beach. \nSince then the beach has been a place for carnivals\, festivals\, concerts and protests\, ranging from the patriotic festivals of the First World War\, through to the beauty contests of the 1960s and now Sculpture by the Sea. The 2019 Foreshore Master Plan heralds another change in the story of Cottesloe Beach. \nJoin us to view the Waves of Change exhibition\, originally produced for the National Trust’s Australian Heritage Festival that was held in The Grove Library in April 2021. The exhibition was supported by the Town of Cottesloe as part of a project to conserve and share the Town’s historical photos and documents.
