SUMMARY:Ikebana: More than nice flowers in a vase!
DESCRIPTION:Ikebana is one of the traditional arts of Japan and has its real beginnings in the Muromachi period – the middle of the fifteenth century. Other Japanese arts that developed at this time were tea ceremony\, Noh\, painting\, garden design and architecture. \nIkebana is often called the “Japanese art of flower arranging”\, but is much more than simply putting flowers in a vase. It is creative expression within certain rules of construction using plant materials. Any plant material may be used as well as flowers. For example\, withered leaves\, seed pods\, branches\, etc. are valued as highly as flowers in full bloom. \nJoin Davorka (Dav) Sudac-Rengel\, licensed Sogetsu Ikebana teacher\, for an introductory presentation and demonstration in the Heritage Collective Theatre. \nDav will be conducting an introductory short course in Ikebana techniques in April 2025.

SUMMARY:Ross Potter: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Ross Potter is our 3rd Artist in Residence! Join us to hear about Ross’s artistic practice and latest residency experiences\, including a fascinating turn in his work during his time recently in Iceland\, as well as an insight into his exhibition ‘Things That Sleep Beneath the Snow’ at Rockingham Arts Centre. \nWHEN: Wednesday 5 February\, 4:30–5:30pm\nWHERE: The Heritage Theatre\nBring your friends and family. It’s free. Bookings are essential. \nRoss Potter is a Kamilaroi man and professional artist living on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar\, in Walyalup/Fremantle. He works with pencil and paper to produce highly detailed\, often large-scale representations of his subjects. Through magnifying microscopic features\, Ross brings the abstractions of reality to our attention\, while telling compelling stories of everyday life. One of his most well-known works is a life-sized drawing of Perth Zoo’s beloved elephant Tricia\, which he created in the gallery during Fremantle Arts Centre’s hugely popular kids’ exhibition Animaze: Amazing Animals for Kids in 2018. Ross’s work has also been presented in numerous exhibitions and was shown in the Fremantle Biennale and at Boola Bardip WA Museum. Ross has undertaken artist residencies across Western Australia\, including Cossack\, Margaret River and most recently his first international residency at Herhúsid in Siglufjördur\, Iceland. \nWe look forward to having Ross’s energy and creativity at the Makerspace until June 2024. Drop in to say Hi! and observe the progress of his works.
