The Living Ocean Festival Exhibition opens in January 2025

Curtin Heritage Living’s Heritage Collective presents a sparkling marine life exhibition at the new Linton & Kay Gallery in Cottesloe, 10 – 30 January 2025

The Living Ocean Festival is a constellation of thirty-five events bringing children, their families and the wider community together to explore and discover the ocean’s surprises and secrets. The program has included beach combing, taxonomy walks, drawing from nature, pop up field stations, bird walks, sunset talks with marine scientists, painting workshops at the new Heritage Collective Makerspace, biodiversity workshops with three local schools, aged care providers, Rocky Bay and DADAA artists. Over 700 people took part in these events.

The Living Ocean Festival is a result of the Heritage Collective’s inaugural Artist in Residence initiative. Housed in beautifully restored heritage buildings, originally built for convalescence, The Heritage Collective hosts a unique arts and cultural program connecting the local older people with the broader West Australian community, aiming to reduce isolation and increase connectivity.

The Living Ocean Festival is designed by inaugural Artist in Residence, Artist and Biodiversity Educator; Angela Rossen. Angela is an artist who works with scientists at the School of the Biological Sciences UWA and the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Her work in community outreach and science communication is recognised by appointments as Honorary Research Associate and Adjunct Artist.

Angela says:

“We are all drawn to nature. Being outdoors surrounded by rivers, forests, woodlands or the ocean fills theheart with joy. Exploring and discovering nature is good for health, creativity and wellbeing but somehow, in our busy lives we neglect just being outdoors.“

The Living Ocean Festival has brought together people of all ages to create paintings and drawings which form a stunning snapshot of the living things of our sunlit shallow ocean. These artworks will take the viewer over the seagrass meadows and fringing reefs of our own beaches.

 The exhibition is on display at the new Linton & Kay Gallery on Marine Parade, Cottesloe from 10^th to 30^th January 2025.
