SUMMARY:Ikebana: More than nice flowers in a vase!
DESCRIPTION:Ikebana is one of the traditional arts of Japan and has its real beginnings in the Muromachi period – the middle of the fifteenth century. Other Japanese arts that developed at this time were tea ceremony\, Noh\, painting\, garden design and architecture. \nIkebana is often called the “Japanese art of flower arranging”\, but is much more than simply putting flowers in a vase. It is creative expression within certain rules of construction using plant materials. Any plant material may be used as well as flowers. For example\, withered leaves\, seed pods\, branches\, etc. are valued as highly as flowers in full bloom. \nJoin Davorka (Dav) Sudac-Rengel\, licensed Sogetsu Ikebana teacher\, for an introductory presentation and demonstration in the Heritage Collective Theatre. \nDav will be conducting an introductory short course in Ikebana techniques in April 2025.

SUMMARY:Ross Potter: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Ross Potter is our 3rd Artist in Residence! Join us to hear about Ross’s artistic practice and latest residency experiences\, including a fascinating turn in his work during his time recently in Iceland\, as well as an insight into his exhibition ‘Things That Sleep Beneath the Snow’ at Rockingham Arts Centre. \nWHEN: Wednesday 5 February\, 4:30–5:30pm\nWHERE: The Heritage Theatre\nBring your friends and family. It’s free. Bookings are essential. \nRoss Potter is a Kamilaroi man and professional artist living on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar\, in Walyalup/Fremantle. He works with pencil and paper to produce highly detailed\, often large-scale representations of his subjects. Through magnifying microscopic features\, Ross brings the abstractions of reality to our attention\, while telling compelling stories of everyday life. One of his most well-known works is a life-sized drawing of Perth Zoo’s beloved elephant Tricia\, which he created in the gallery during Fremantle Arts Centre’s hugely popular kids’ exhibition Animaze: Amazing Animals for Kids in 2018. Ross’s work has also been presented in numerous exhibitions and was shown in the Fremantle Biennale and at Boola Bardip WA Museum. Ross has undertaken artist residencies across Western Australia\, including Cossack\, Margaret River and most recently his first international residency at Herhúsid in Siglufjördur\, Iceland. \nWe look forward to having Ross’s energy and creativity at the Makerspace until June 2024. Drop in to say Hi! and observe the progress of his works.

SUMMARY:Western Australia - An Historical Boast with Richard Offen
DESCRIPTION:Western Australia – An Historical Boast \nWestern Australians do not seem keen to boast about the history of their State\, in fact few residents realise that on their own doorsteps are many features and places of international historical significance.\nStarting with fossils in the Pilbara and some of the earliest evidence of Aboriginal communal living\, to the remains of a fort on the Abrolhos Islands\, Richard Offen’s talk will give a virtual tour of some of the places that give Western Australian a very special status\nin the world’s history. Add to this some of the early buildings of the Swan River Colony\, set up in 1829\, and Richard will comprehensively debunk the myth that Western Australia has no history or heritage! \nRichard Offen: Biography\nAfter working in education for several years\, Richard Offen joined the staff of the UK National Trust in 1989 and from 1992 until 2003 was responsible for the Trust’s famous Neptune Coastline Campaign. Under his direction the campaign raised over £28\nmillion\, enabling the Trust to buy and protect nearly one hundred miles of the spectacular British coastline.\nRichard has wide experience of heritage matters around the world. During his time with the Trust\, he worked with organisations in the USA\, Spain\, Malta and the Czech Republic\, helping them develop conservation strategies and fundraising plans.\nDuring a six-month sabbatical in 2001\, Richard worked on secondment to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington DC and spent time on an exchange program with the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales and the\nNational Trust in Australia (WA) in Perth.\nIn 2005 he emigrated to Western Australia to become Executive Director of the newly formed organisation\, Heritage Perth. During his time in that post\, he gained great popularity as a lecturer and broadcaster on both radio and television. He is probably best\nknown in Perth for his Monday morning history spot on the 720 ABC Breakfast Show with the late\, much missed Eoin Cameron\, and still has regular spots on ABC Perth\, Capital Radio and 6PR.\nSince retiring\, Richard has written the Perth editions of Pavilion Books’ very popular series ‘Then and Now’ and ‘Lost Perth’. ‘Perth  Then and Now’ has the distinction of requiring a reprint before it was launched and is now on the Australian ‘best seller’ list having sold around 20\,000 copies to date. ‘Lost Perth’ has also now joined its companion of the Australian ‘best seller’ list. His third book for the same publisher\, ‘A Perth Camera’ was published in November 2022. Richard has also written histories of St Mary’s Anglican\nGirls’ School (‘A Place to Grow’ – published 2021) and Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School (‘The School in the Bush’ – also published in November 2022).\nWhen not in his study/library\, Richard is an active parishioner and Churchwarden of Christ Church\, Claremont\, sits on the Heritage Council of Western Australia; is President of both the Friends of the Battye Library and the Royal Western Australian Historical Society; and is a member of the selection panel for the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia’s Hall of Fame

Ladies such as Eliza Shaw\, who through her diaries and writings reveals the joys\, sorrows and extreme hardships of early life in the Swan River Colony. Then there is Moondyne Joe\, the infamous 19th century Houdini\, who managed to escape from many of Western Australia’s jails. Were they ‘mad\, bad or totally eccentric’? Come along and judge for yourself! \nRichard Offen is a historian\, lecturer\, broadcaster and overall champion for Perth. First visiting our city in 2001\, he said it was love at first site so to speak. The weather\, open space and greenery within our city are no comparison to gloomy UK and its wet weather\, where Offen originates from. Working with Heritage Perth\, they aimed to put the expression “Perth has no history” to bed! Developing walking tours around Perth they managed to attract a lot of Perth locals who were interested in knowing more about its history. Richard continues to educate people of Perth’s Heritage through his books “Lost Perth” & “Perth Then and Now”. \nJoin Richard in The Heritage Collective Theatre for a 1-hour talk\, with complimentary glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage on entry\, and another following the talk as you can chat ask Richard questions until 4pm.

SUMMARY:Heritage Collective Theatre - The Great Escaper
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2014\, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy\, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary. \nIt was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant\, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course\, it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitised retelling of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war. \nBernie’s adventure\, spanning a mere 48 hours\, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson). The Great Escaper celebrates their enduring love\, but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation. \nJoin us in The Heritage Collective Theatre.
