Draw, experiment and create with nature as your inspiration. Explore the endless creative possibilities of botanical drawing in this hands-on, three-hour workshop with artist and experienced teacher Jenny Gilbertson.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced artist, Jenny will introduce you to playful ways of combining drawing, painting and collage to create expressive botanical artworks. Experiment with colour, texture, line and composition while working from natural forms such as leaves, seeds, pods and plants.
What you’ll learn
Jenny will guide you through techniques for combining a range of materials, including:
- Coloured pencil and graphite
- Pastels and charcoal
- Ink
- Watercolour, gouache and acrylic
- Collage
- Found natural objects and textured papers
You’ll have the freedom to experiment, follow your own ideas and develop your individual style.
Some papers and materials are provided, but you’re encouraged to bring your favourite art materials and natural objects to work from.
What to bring
Bring a selection of natural forms that inspire you — leaves, seeds, pods, flowers or whole plants — along with any materials you enjoy working with.
Drawing materials: graphite, coloured pencils, Conté, chalk or oil pastels, ink and charcoal.
Paints: watercolour, gouache or acrylic. Please do not bring oils, as they require specialist paper preparation and take longer to dry.
Papers: Bring a small selection of papers, such as coloured pastel paper, Japanese papers or decorative papers.
Collage materials: dry leaves, flattened seaweed, cotton, fabric and other lightweight found objects. Printed images can also be used, provided they are on non-glossy paper.
Come curious, bring your creativity and discover new ways to draw from the natural world.
Cost: $120
