Ikebana is the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging, meaning “making flowers come alive.” This practice involves selecting blossoms, greenery, and other flora to express specific emotions, similar to a painting or sculpture. With over 600 years of history, ikebana is a precious tradition in Japan, connecting generations through creativity and a love for nature. It reflects Japanese aesthetic sensibilities and philosophies. Today, the art of ikebana pushes design boundaries with bold, minimalist arrangements and avant-garde designs.
Davorka (Dav) Sudac-Renge’s Introduction to Ikebana at The Heritage Collective’s Makerspace has been hugely popular. During her sessions, she shares insights into the history and development of Ikebana in Japan, using locally available materials and advocates for an anti-waste approach. For Dav, less is more; you don’t need a bouquet of roses or orchids—just one or two blooms can be just as impactful
Her next course, “Exploring Ikebana: Freestyle Table Arrangements,” starts on April 23 and is designed for more experienced Ikebana practitioners or those who have completed the three-session introductory course.
